How to beat Yagluth in Valheim
Yagluth is the fallen Fuling king of the Plains. He has 10,000 health and can't be staggered. He is very resistant to Pierce, resistant to Fire and immune to Poison, so arrows, spears and poison do little to him. He moves slowly and fights with fire and lightning, which makes this a fight about damage type and positioning.
Where is Yagluth's altar?
His summoning site is the Yagluth location in the Plains. A world has up to four of them, spaced at least 3,000 metres apart. The altar has five totem holders.
A Vegvisir in the Plains marks the altar on your map when you read it. To see where the altars can be before you travel, open your world on the seed map; the seed map guide shows how.
How do you summon Yagluth?
Place one Fuling Totem in each of the five holders at the altar. Five totems in total.
Totems come from the Plains:
- Fuling Berserkers drop one 10% of the time.
- Some chests in the Plains hold one, at a 14% chance.
- You can also find totems lying in the Plains and pick them up.
Raiding a few Fuling villages is usually the quickest route, since that is where the Berserkers are. The Fuling Totem page lists every source, including the Sealed Tower.
What gear should you bring?
Come in Plains gear: the Padded Cuirass, Padded Greaves and Padded Helmet, with Black Metal weapons from the Forge.
Pick weapons by damage type. Yagluth shrugs off Pierce and Poison and takes reduced Fire damage. Blunt, Slash, Frost, Lightning and Spirit all land at full strength.
- Frostner is an excellent choice: all three of its damage types (35 Blunt, 40 Frost, 20 Spirit) hit him unreduced.
- The Black Metal Sword (95 Slash) and Black Metal Axe are solid Plains-tier picks.
- The Silver Sword works too; its Spirit damage is not resisted.
- Leave bows, spears and the Black Metal Atgeir behind unless you have nothing else. Their Pierce damage is heavily reduced.
Pair your weapon with a Black Metal Shield or a Serpent Scale Shield. All of Yagluth's attacks can be blocked or dodged.
Fire protection. Every attack he has deals Fire damage. Fire Resistance Barley Wine makes you Resistant to Fire for 10 minutes; drink it just before you place the last totem. There is no mead for Lightning damage, so plan to avoid the big hits.
Food and meads. Eat for health: Lox Meat Pie (75 health), Fish Wraps (70 health), and Blood Pudding or Bread for stamina. Bring Medium Healing Mead or Major Healing Mead if you have them, plus Medium Stamina Mead.
What attacks does Yagluth use?
| Attack | Reach | Damage | How to handle it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 m | 40 | A sustained beam that sweeps toward you. | |
| Ground nova | 10 m area | 65 | He slams the ground and a ring of fire bursts out around him. When he raises his arms for it, get more than 10 metres away or block. Blue fire lingers on the ground for a short while afterwards, so don't rush back through it. |
| Meteor rain | 15 m spread | 40 Blunt, 120 | Ten meteors come down within 15 metres, each exploding in a 5-metre radius and leaving fire on the ground. Each one can be blocked or dodged, but moving out of the impact zone is safer than blocking ten hits. |
How does the fight go?
Yagluth moves slowly. That is your advantage.
- Hit him while he rises. His summoning animation leaves him open, so land free hits before the fight properly starts.
- Stay close for melee, but not too close. Work at the edge of his reach, hit two or three times, then step out before the nova.
- Watch his arms. A raised-arm windup means the nova is coming. Back off or block, then walk straight back in and punish.
- Keep moving during the meteor rain. A standing target gets hit repeatedly, and the burning ground punishes you for staying put. Circle him until it passes.
- Use cover for the beam. Terrain or stonework between you and him blocks it. Duck behind something solid to drink a mead.
- Fighting as a group, spread out so one beam can't catch everyone, and let one player hold his attention while the others strike from behind.
He does not regenerate fast. If things go wrong, retreat, heal and come back; he is too slow to chase you far.
What does Yagluth drop, and what does it unlock?
Yagluth always drops the Yagluth Trophy and three Torn Spirits.
Torn Spirits build the Wisp Fountain, which costs one Torn Spirit and ten Stone. It attracts Wisps, mostly at night, and Wisps are what you need for the Wisplight that pushes back the mist in the Mistlands. Build the fountain before anything else; you will want a stock of Wisps before your first trip.
The Forsaken power. Hang the trophy at the Sacrificial Stone to take Yagluth's power. While it is active you take half damage from Lightning, gain 25 in Farming and deal 10% more damage. It lasts 5 minutes with a 20-minute cooldown and reaches every player within 10 metres. You hold one power at a time. The power's page lists the raids it keeps away from you.
Trader stock. After Yagluth, Haldor sells the Egg for 1,500 coins, which lets you start raising chickens, and the Bog Witch adds Grasslands Herbalist Harvest.
What should you do next?
The Mistlands are next. Build the Wisp Fountain, collect Wisps, and make a Wisplight before you go in. The next boss is The Queen, who waits inside an Infested Citadel; see how to beat The Queen.
