Valheim 1.0.15

Portals and teleportable items in Valheim 1.0

A portal in Valheim will not carry every item through it. The restriction lives on the item itself, not on the portal, and a single world setting decides whether it applies at all.

What a portal refuses by default

Twenty-eight items carry the game's own no-teleport flag. Most of them are raw ore and the metal bars smelted from it:

None of these will enter a portal's inventory check while the world keeps its default setting. A boat, a cart, or the player's own legs remain the way to carry them.

The item nothing can override

Separately from that list, the game refuses to teleport any item whose tool tier reaches a fixed threshold, no matter what the world's portal setting says. Today that threshold is met by exactly one item: Sacrificial Blood. Its own teleportable flag is set to allow teleporting, but the tool-tier check runs first and blocks it anyway, so it stays untouched by the Portal Items setting below.

The Portal Items world modifier

World generation exposes a Portals setting with four options. The default keeps the restriction described above. Casual turns on Portal Items, which removes the ordinary no-teleport flag from every item in that world, so ore and bars travel through portals like anything else, short of the tool-tier item above. The same setting group also has Hard, which blocks portal use and exiting boss dungeons while a boss fight is active, and Very Hard, which turns off portal teleportation for the whole world. Portal Items, the boss restriction and the full shutdown are three separate choices picked once, when the world is created.
