How to beat The Queen in Valheim

The Queen is the Seeker matriarch of the Mistlands. She has 12,500 health, can't be staggered, is resistant to Pierce and immune to Spirit. She fights at every range, poisons you up close, burrows away and resurfaces, and calls Seekers to her side. Getting to her is a project of its own: you need a key to open her citadel.

Where is The Queen?

She lives inside an Infested Citadel, a sealed Dvergr fortress in the Mistlands. A world has up to five of them, each at least 2,048 metres from the next and built low, between 1 and 20 metres of altitude. Look for a Vegvisir inside the Infested Mines: it points you to the nearest citadel. You can also check your world on the seed map before you travel; the seed map guide explains how.

Bring a Wisplight for the whole trip. It clears the mist around you, and without it you won't see Seekers until they are on top of you.

How do you get into the Infested Citadel?

The citadel's inner door is the Dvergr Vault, and only a Sealbreaker opens it.

  1. Collect nine Sealbreaker Fragments. They come from the glowing crystals on black marble altars inside Infested Mines. Break the crystal and the fragment drops. Mines are common, so expect to clear several.
  2. Craft the Sealbreaker. Nine fragments make one Sealbreaker at the Galdr Table, at its base level.
  3. Open the vault. Carry the Sealbreaker to the citadel and use it on the sealed door.

Infested Mines are full of Seekers, Seeker Soldiers and Ticks, so clearing them is good practice for the fight to come. Their chests often hold Poison Resistance Mead, which you will want.

Do you need an offering to fight The Queen?

Not the first time. The Queen is already waiting inside the citadel, so opening the vault with the Sealbreaker is all it takes to reach her. Before you go through the door, repair your gear, eat, and set a portal close to the entrance.

To fight her again later, use the Hive seat, the offering altar in the citadel's boss room. Place three Seeker Soldier Trophies on it, and she emerges about 12 seconds later. Seeker Soldiers drop their trophy only 5% of the time, so keep the ones you find in the mines.

What gear should you bring?

Come in full Mistlands gear: the Carapace Breastplate, Carapace Greaves and Carapace Helmet, or Eitr-weave if you fight with magic.

Weapons. The Queen resists Pierce and ignores Spirit. Blunt, Slash, Fire, Frost, Lightning and Poison all land in full.

A Carapace Shield or Carapace Buckler will handle her claws. Every one of her attacks can be blocked or dodged.

Poison protection. Two of her attacks deal Poison damage. Poison Resistance Mead makes you very resistant to Poison for 10 minutes. Drink it right before the offering.

Food and meads. Eat for health and stamina: Misthare Supreme (85 health), Meat Platter or Honey Glazed Chicken (80 health each), and Salad or Mushroom Omelette for stamina. Magic users should swap one for Seeker Aspic or Yggdrasil Porridge for Eitr. Carry Major Healing Mead and Lingering Stamina Mead.

What attacks does The Queen use?

AttackReachDamageHow to handle it
Burrowacross the arenanoneShe digs underground and resurfaces somewhere else. Keep moving and watch for her to come up near you.
Rush25 m100 SlashA charge across the room. Dodge sideways at the last moment.
Bite10 m140 Pierce, 100 PoisonHer most dangerous hit. Don't stand in front of her mouth; attack from the side.
Slap9 m130 SlashA wide swipe. Block it or roll out.
Spike burst4 m area150 PierceSpikes erupt right around her. Step back out of the 4-metre radius when she stops to wind up.
Spit25 m40 Blunt, 40 Poison per globA spray of about twenty poison globs, some of which hatch into Seeker Brood where they land. Keep moving sideways and clear any brood right away.
Call25 mnoneShe calls Seekers into the fight. Kill them quickly or they overwhelm you.

How does the fight go?

  1. Kill the adds first. When she calls, Seekers pour in. A quick swing or two clears them before they pin you against the wall.
  2. Fight from her flank. Bite, slap and spike burst all punish players who stand directly in front of her.
  3. Back off during the spike burst. Its reach is only 4 metres, so a single step or roll clears it.
  4. Track her when she burrows. She can come up anywhere. Stop attacking and move until you know where she is.
  5. Keep an eye on poison. Poison ticks after the hit. Keep your mead topped up and heal early.

With a group, let one player tank with a shield while the others hit from the sides and clear Seekers.

If the fight turns against you, fall back to the entrance. She can't follow you there, so it's a safe place to heal and wait for your stamina.

What does The Queen drop, and what does it unlock?

She always drops The Queen Trophy and five Majestic Carapace.

Majestic Carapace builds the Artisan Press, together with five Bronze and five Black Marble. It raises your Artisan Table by one station level for more advanced designs.

The Forsaken power. Hang the trophy at the Sacrificial Stone to take The Queen's power. While it is active your Eitr regenerates twice as fast, you take half damage from Poison and sneaking costs no stamina. It lasts 5 minutes with a 20-minute cooldown and covers every player within 10 metres. You hold one power at a time, and the power's page lists the raids it keeps away from you.

Trader stock. Haldor starts selling Deeper Pockets for 2,000 coins, and the Bog Witch adds Herbs of the Hidden Hills.

A change in the Mistlands. Once The Queen is dead, Seeker Brood start appearing in the Mistlands at night.

What should you do next?

The Ashlands are next. Build the Artisan Press, upgrade your Mistlands gear, and prepare for the heat.
